KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 — Police are investigating a video of a religious school student being beaten up by a schoolmate after the victim’s father lodged a report yesterday, said Penampang district police chief Deputy Superintendent Rosley Hobden.
Rosley said the case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code pertaining to voluntarily causing hurt, and that action will be taken after the students have completed their Primary School Evaluation Test (UPSR).
"The police received a report from the father of the victim at 9.30am [yesterday]. Based on preliminary information, the event occurred last week involving a Standard Six student bullying a peer in a classroom,” he was reported saying by Malay language daily Berita Harian.
"We conducting investigations on the case, which includes taking the statements of the bully victim and the students who were watching the incident take place, as the video is being spread on social media.”
He added that the victim did not suffer major injuries from the incident.
"The reason behind why the student decided to beat the victim is still being investigated. The student who was bullied however was reported to only have suffered minor injuries and has received medical treatment as an outpatient,” Rosley said.
The video of the boy being beaten up in a classroom, reportedly in a religious school in Putatan, a Kota Kinabalu suburb, went viral on Facebook yesterday.
The victim can be seen being choked, kicked, and beaten with a chair by the aggressor as other students stood around them to watch and record the incident.
Among the Facebook pages that had uploaded the video include Facebook page "Saya Orang Sabah”, where the video has been viewed more than 84,000 times and shared by 2,518 people since Monday at time of writing.
