KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 — The Immigration Department will be called up tomorrow for an inquiry into its immigration system, Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Datuk Hasan Arifin said today.

Hasan said the inquiry is part of the bipartisan committee’s three-day proceedings over three matters.

"Tomorrow, the PAC will call the Home Ministry and Immigration Department of Malaysia in proceedings involving the Malaysian Immigration System (myIMMs) implementation programme,” he said in a brief statement today.

Hasan did not specify what aspect of the myIMMs implementation will be probed, but the system was previously reported to have been compromised and alleged to have been sabotaged.

The first series of the Auditor-General’s 2015 report had said the myIMMs system was not functioning satisfactorily and a RM10.3 million biometric system and equipment purchased to screen those entering Malaysia was not installed and not in use.

Hasan said the PAC’s first evaluation in these three days was on the socio-economic development programme for the Orang Asli community as cited in the third series of the Auditor-General’s 2014 report, with a particular focus on treated water supply for the indigenous group.

He said the committee today obtained clarification from Rural and Regional Development Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohd Arif Ab Rahman and Department of Orang Asli Development’s (Jakoa) director-general Mohd Jamaluddin Kasbi on the provision of a Treated Water Supply System for the Orang Asli community.

As for this Wednesday, the proceedings before the PAC will be on the provision of water in rural areas in Sabah and will involve the Rural and Regional Development Ministry.
