KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31 — Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria has said he is unaffected by the satirical ‘insulting intelligence’ award given to him for his remarks on marital rape last year.
"I am not offended but I feel the actions of the NGO is foolish,” he was quoted saying by Malay language daily Sinar Harian.
"I will continue my preaching as usual. Their actions have nothing to do with me,” he added.
Harussani "won” the ‘insulting intelligence’ award at the "Aiyoh...wat lah?!” satirical awards show organised by the Joint Action Group for Gender Equality (JAG) on Sunday.
The award was given for his April 27, 2015 remarks that women must follow their husband’s request for sexual intercourse even when they were riding "on the back of the camel”.
The Perak Mufti had stressed that the concept of marital rape does not exist in Islam, saying a wife can only refuse her husband sex if she is menstruating, sick, or has just given birth.
Harussani further told the daily that the remarks he had made last year were in accordance to Islamic principles, whereby he said even the prophet stressed on marriage roles such as the husband’s responsibility to ensure a family’s good health, clothing, a home and education
"It applies as well when it comes to a wife’s loyalty to her husband. That is how intimate relationships are in a marriage for Muslims,” he said.
"It is not like in the West where they have relations out of lust, where if a man wants to but the wife refuses, it is considered rape. This is a stupid rule.”
Several Islamic groups have condemned JAG over the mock award including Malay rights group Perkasa, Perak PAS Youth as well as the Federal Territories chapter of PAS.
