KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 — Badminton world No.1 Datuk Lee Chong Wei has dismissed rumours alleging that he has a net worth of around RM300 million.
The national shuttler was reported by website thecelebritiesnetworth.com as owning assets amounting to US$75 million (RM301.3 million) in the form of luxury cars, properties as well as endorsements.
But Lee quashed said rumours, pointing out that even the best athletes in the country would find it hard to amass that kind of wealth.
"I don’t think a Malaysian sportsman can make RM300 million. I don't think so. Even RM10 million or a million also is very hard because badminton is not the same as golf, tennis or football.
"If I have RM300 million I think I will stop playing badminton. I don't think I will have to work, I will just sit at home,” Lee was quoted as saying by the Star Online news portal.
Lee and his fellow Malaysian Olympians were recently awarded cash prizes of up to RM315,000 for their strong performances at the Rio Olympics, with the 33-year-old also receiving RM110,000 from XOX Mobile for his silver medal.
In addition to a RM200,000 cashfall from the government, Lee was also awarded a RM1.5 million condominium in Taman Maluri for his efforts in Rio.
