BUCG halts construction after crane hook accident

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 — Construction company BUCG (M) Sdn Bhd has suspended works on its hotel project, pending advice from the authorities following a freak accident where a crane hook fell and killed a motorist.

BUCG confirmed that they were the lead for the project by Harmoni Perkasa Sdn Bhd near Pavilion KL in the city centre, with Yekon Equipment (M) Sdn Bhd being the crane equipment owner and Sufiyan Enterprise being the crane operator.

"It is with our deepest sympathies that BUCG (M) Sdn Bhd confirms that at 7.20pm yesterday, the fatal accident on Jalan Raja Chulan was as a result of equipment used on the project site of the Harmoni Perkasa Sdn Bhd hotel project,” BUCG said in a statement today.

"We have suspended all the works until further advice from the relevant authorities. Safety is our utmost priority and all construction partners are to provide a ‘duty of care’.

"Yekon Equipment (M) Sdn Bhd is also cooperating with the authorities in their investigations of the accident and in relation to the crane operator Sufiyan Enterprise (who is Malaysian — according to the certificates obtained and submitted to the authorities for their authentication),” it added.

News portal The Star Online had earlier today reported that the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) said it is working with police to locate the crane operator who has gone missing after the crane hook fell on a car yesterday, killing the driver, 23-year-old Chin Khoon Sing, who was in a traffic jam at Jalan Raja Chulan near the Pavilion shopping complex.

She was found pinned inside the wrecked Perodua Kelisa when rescue personnel arrived at the scene soon after the incident.
