KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 23 — Malaysia has no problem in achieving its goal for all children to receive primary education by 2030, said Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.

He said at present, the enrolment rate for primary school education was 96 per cent, and the target of 100 per cent could be achieved much earlier than planned.

However, Malaysia had to look at the challenges of achieving 100 per cent enrolment in secondary school, which now stood at 86 per cent, he said.

"For primary schools, we do not have a problem (to achieve the target of 100 per cent enrolment). But for secondary schools, we may have to look at the Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) which is based on interests.

"TVET will be a game-changer because we offer a wide variety of courses, and this can lead to an increase in enrolment rates,” he told reporters after launching the Education 2030 symposium here, today.

Malaysia, said Mahdzir, was committed to achieving the targets set forth by Education 2030, the main education agenda at the global level outlined by the United Nations in achieving sustainable development.

Education 2030, among other things includes improving access to quality education for early childhood, pre-school, primary and secondary schools; access to technical and vocational education and higher education; gender equality; sustainable living and global citizenship. — Bernama
