GEORGE TOWN, Aug 22 — His hands in cuffs behind his back, rapper Namewee was brought to the Penang courthouse at about 10.25am today as police seek a remand order over his controversial music video Oh My God.

The 33-year-old Johorean born Wee Meng Chee had caused a stir after several religious groups accused him of blasphemy with his music video that had purportedly been filmed in several houses of worship here.

The singer-songwriter who had been abroad was detained the moment he arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport yesterday and was brought to Penang late last night.

Assistant court registrar Ahmad Tajudin Zaini granted a four-day remand for Wee that will end on August 25.

Wee will be investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code for defiling a place of worship with intention to insult the religion.

The section carries with it a jail term of up to two years, or a fine or both upon conviction.

Several police reports were lodged against Wee over his music video alleging it to be against Islam.

The chairman of Masjid Terapung Tanjung Bungah had lodged a police report against Wee, claiming the video was shot at the mosque.

The Johorean is no stranger to controversy, and has released similar critical music videos in the last few years, including one against Tenaga National and another against the Lynas project in Pahang.

Namewee first gained notoriety with his 2007 rap video, Negarukuku, that was said to mock the national anthem.
