Two-year-old suspected abuse victim dies, mum and boyfriend remanded

SUNGAI PETANI, Aug 12 — A two-year-old girl from Amanjaya, near here, died on Wednesday, believed to be from physical abuse, based on the presence of old and new bruise marks all over her body.

Kuala Muda district police chief, ACP Md Zukir Md Isa said the child died about 9.40pm on August 10 while being taken by her mother to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital, here.

"According to the doctor (who examined her), the little girl was suspected to have been abused as there were bruise marks on her abdomen and genitals, besides old and new bruise marks on other parts of her body,” he said in a statement, here, today.

Md Zukir said the victim had been under the care of the mother and her boyfriend, while the father was at the Dengkil Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Selangor since December, last year.

Following the child’s death, her 22-year-old mother and boyfriend, 24, are being remanded for a week from yesterday until August 17 to facilitate the police investigation.

Md Zukir said it was found from the previous record, that the victim had been abused by her caregiver on January 9, last year and that person was charged in court on February 1, 2016. — Bernama
