PUTRAJAYA, Aug 11 — The minister in charge of national unity is concerned that Malaysians are growing further apart as the country approaches its 59th Merdeka Day.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup yesterday said that while the people were still generally united, more effort must be made to strengthen the people’s bond.
"It is sad but this is the truth,” he told Malay Mail yesterday.
"Back when I was younger, Malays, Indians and Chinese could be seen sitting together at a stall and having a conversation regardless of whether the shop is owned by either race.
"Back then, a Chinese couple can adopt a baby of another race without any hassle but now it will receive negative comments and feedback from various authorities.”
Asked if politics was the main divisive factor, Kurup said it was not but politicians, regardless of their party, should not use race and religion to increase their votes.
"This is politics, but I hope it does not cause hate among different religions as it will make it more difficult for leaders who have national unity in sight to carry out their plans in line with Vision 2020,” he said.
"Our unity is still at a healthy level but we must monitor the situation carefully to protect it.”
On his proposal to introduce a cross-cultural module in schools, Kurup said it would educate students on the diverse practises, cultural norms, customs and beliefs of the various communities.
This was important to nurture the spirit of unity, national integration and patriotism among the people of various races, especially the younger generation.
"We plan on introducing it not just to primary and secondary schools but pre-schools as well. We are also looking to introducing it to non-governmental organisations, if possible,” he said.
He said he was still waiting for approval and feedback from the Education Ministry.
"I have yet to receive a reply from them and at this stage it is not confirmed whether it will be a subject or a module,” he said.
"Personally, this is something very important for me as it will allow students to understand differences between all cultures and give them an insight into other ethnic groups.
"I am hoping to get positive feedback and to continue with my plan for a more united nation.”
