Malaysia tops Ramadan-related app use, ahead of Indonesia, says report

KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 ― Despite having a smaller Muslim population than Indonesia, Malaysia surpassed its neighbour in using Ramadan-related mobile applications, according to a report today.

Warc.com, a business website, cited a study conducted Beijing-based research firm Cheetah Global Lab about the the penetration of Ramadan applications in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, based on mobile data usage in the build up to the Ramadan fasting month and the first week of fasting.

The study found that in the period, there was a 9.83 per cent penetration for Islamic applications in Malaysia.

Indonesia, which has the largest Muslim population in the world, had a 7.24 per cent penetration rate followed by Singapore at 3.11 per cent.

Thirteen of the top 30 fastest growing applications in Malaysia in the research period were also related to Ramadan, the report said.

As of 2013, there are approximately 19.5 million Muslims in Malaysia ― or 61.3 per cent of the population.

Indonesia has approximate 202.9 million Muslims, or 87.2 per cent of the country’s population.
