GEORGE TOWN, July 25 — The police are investigating the use of flares and smoke bombs during a corteo by the Ultras Selangor ahead of a football game here over the weekend, after a video capturing the incident spread on the Internet.

Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said the investigation is conducted under Section 4 of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act, which carries a jail sentence of up to seven years with whipping upon conviction.

"I wish to warn and advise all supporters for both side of the teams not to act out against the law and be professional supporters,” he said here.

Last Saturday, the Ultras Selangor held a parade in support of their Selangor team, also known as a corteo, along Jalan Perak towards the city stadium about 6pm before the football match with Penang.

The smoky corteo was captured on video and shared on social media applications. Based on their comments, many who watched the clip mistook the parade for a street demonstration.

Mior said security into the Penang city stadium tomorrow night, for the Super League match between Penang and Kedah, will be tightened to prevent fans from bringing in illegal items.

"We will increase security checks at entrances to the stadium before the beginning of any matches to prevent any untoward incidences,” he said.

He advised football fans to control their emotion as there are always winners and losers in any football match.
