KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 — Selangor will not ban the concert by US pop singer Selena Gomez that came under protest from PAS Youth, said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.

The state government has no reason to prohibit the event from proceeding so long as the organisers meet all the requirements set by local authorities, he added.

Responding to PAS Youth’s claim that the "sexy” American singer’s concert would taint the Muslim month of Syawal, he explained that sex appeal was not an attribute that should be maligned.

"Sexiness is God’s creation and subjective, do not be over excited by it, most (of her fans) are drawn by the song lyrics delivered by the particular singer,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian in its news portal.

He also said there was no issue with holding the concert in the month of Syawal, adding that every month should be equally respected.

Azmin said, however, that the Shah Alam Municipal Council has yet to receive any application for the concert scheduled for July 25.

Yesterday, PAS Youth objected against the concert, claiming that Gomez’s sexiness would besmirch the holiness of the month of Syawal and promote hedonism.

Gomez’s concert is part of her "Revival” tour and will be held at the Stadium Melawati in Shah Alam.

Concerts held by international musicians and bands in Malaysia frequently see opposition from hardline Muslim groups and PAS Youth in addition to strict regulations from authorities, causing many to give the country a miss during their Southeast Asian tours.
