KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 — DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) executive secretary Muhammad Shakir Ameer said the PAS Youth’s objection against the upcoming Selena Gomez concert in Shah Alam is simply to seek cheap publicity.
He added objections should have been made known before the approval instead of such a short time ahead of the concert when large amounts of money have already been spent.
"The illogical protest by PAS Youth against Selena Gomez concert shows that they have nothing else constructive to offer to Malaysians but create cheap political publicity,” he said in a statement.
"Based on PAS' logic, it means the internet, television, radio and any other media should be banned as well for promoting Selena Gomez,” he added.
The PAS Youth wing yesterday expressed its disapproval of Gomez’s concert set for July 25, claiming that the "sexy” American pop singer taints the Muslim month of celebration and allegedly promotes hedonism among youths.
MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon had yesterday also hit out at PAS Youth for the objection against the concert.
"Strangely, if PAS Youth deems western concerts as 'causing erosion of faith' and cinemas as the 'cause of social ills', why do they drop silent when local rock artistes perform on stage?” he was quoted saying in a statement by The Star daily today.
"The issue is identical, people performing on stage are deemed to cause erosion of faith among the audience,” Chong added.
He also said the objection "seeks to deprive non-Muslims of their constitutional right to enjoy concerts.”
Chong said as long as the concert organisers conformed to the conditions set by the authorities, including decent attire, noise volume, and the safety of the patrons, the concert should not be a problem.
