SINGAPORE, July 19 — The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) student injured in the Nice attack last Thursday is out of "the critical period” and will return home as soon as doctors clear him for travel, the university said in statement today.

SUTD has sent a senior staff member to Nice to support Esmond Chuah, 22, and the other 11 students who are on a summer programme there. An emergency team from the insurance company have also made their way to Nice to assist the students.

SUTD said the hospital doctor reviewing Chuah’s medical test results found no internal bleeding nor neurological damage. Although "the critical period has passed”, the university noted that Chuah can only be repatriated after the hospital has cleared him for travel.

The other 11 SUTD students — 7 Singaporeans, 2 Permanent Residents, a Vietnamese and an Indonesian — were unhurt.

The university also said it has sent a travel advisery to the 11 students to return upon completing their summer programme, which ends on Friday.

So far, three of the students have informed the university that they will be returning. However, the rest have either decided to proceed with their personal travel plans after the summer programme ends, or will only decide later, the university added. — TODAY
