KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today welcomed Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s plans to form a new political party, saying it was time for all opposition parties to unite and work together.

"Opposition must stay solid, consolidate and work. It is time we must consolidate,” he told reporters as he was being escorted out of the Kuala Lumpur High Court today.

"We look forward to engaging with them. I think it’s a positive thing,” the jailed PKR de facto leader added.

But Anwar said it was up to former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to decide what the new political party’s plans would be.

"We are waiting for Muhyiddin to decide because Muhyiddin is making the decision,” he said, without elaborating on what he meant by this.

Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir confirmed yesterday that he will be a founding member of a new political party which will be part of the Save Malaysia movement as a "component party”.

He did not say, however, who will be leading the party.

In his brief encounter with reporters, Anwar also commented on the ceasefire between PAS and Pakatan Harapan, saying that it was a positive development.

"I saw it as a positive statement from the deputy president.

"I think we look forward to engaging with them,” he said.

PAS deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man on Wednesday mooted a "ceasefire” between his party and Pakatan Harapan — which comprises PKR, the DAP and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) — after the by-elections in Perak and Selangor last month saw BN winning with overwhelming majorities due to PAS and Amanah splitting the vote.
