KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 ― Police have called up DAP lawmaker Nga Kor Ming to record his statement next Monday over an alleged caricature on Facebook that purportedly insulted Islam.
The party's national organising secretary Anthony Loke confirmed that the Perak DAP chief had been summoned to present himself at the Bukit Aman federal police headquarters here next week.
"He has been asked to give his statement at Bukit Aman on Monday," Loke told Malay Mail Online when contacted today.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar was reported to have previously said that Nga would be probed under the Sedition Act for the July 5 Facebook post.
News portal Malaysiakini today reported that Nga had denied having anything to do with the caricature posting and even claimed that he was not the administrator of the Facebook page.
The Taiping MP also had lodged a police report himself earlier today, alleging that he had been slandered, the news portal reported.
Yesterday, a group of some 150 Umno Youth members and supporters in red shirts held an unruly demonstration at the DAP national headquarters in the city here to protest against Nga’s Facebook posts.
Nga has been accused of insulting Muslims through two alleged Facebook posts ― one featuring a caricature on the Muslim practice of giving out cash during the Hari Raya celebration in the form of "duit raya” and "dedak” (a euphemism for chicken feed which is used derogatorily to describe corrupt cash handouts), and another on a Hari Raya greeting with a picture of the United States flag and the saying "In God We Trust”.
Several Umno Youth members also threw "hell notes” — used traditionally at Chinese funerals — at the DAP representative who collected the protesters’ memorandum.
Also present at the rally was controversial veteran Mohd Ali Baharom, also known as Ali Tinju, who was previously among the leaders of the so-called "Red Shirts” rally to uphold Malay honour in Kuala Lumpur last September.
