KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 — The Ministry of Transport said today it will investigate the bus company behind a 10-vehicle crash on Sunday and may take legal action should be company be found at fault.

"We will definitely look into the laws, and we can take action against the company if it has violated the laws,” Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai was quoted as saying by news portal The Star Online.

Liow’s remark came after police determined that faulty brakes were the reason for the crash as the bus was headed southbound on a slope while on the North-South Expressway near the Menora Tunnel.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (North Zone) highway commander ASP Hazil Reza Mohd Ghazali also told national news wire Bernama yesterday that faulty brakes were the likely cause of the accident.

The Star Online reported earlier today that the bus driver from Johor will be remanded today to help with investigations under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.

Online footage of the incident, which appears to have been recorded with a static traffic camera, showed the bus coming out of a turn at high speed and ploughing through cars as it moved in between two lanes.

Sunday’s accident, which left two injured, reduced traffic to a crawl over a 11km stretch, the highway operator’s spokesman told Bernama yesterday.
