KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) promised instant expulsion or termination of scholarships for students found involved in militant activities.

The Bumiputera empowerment agency’s chairman Tan Sri Annuar Musa said the institution will not tolerate radicalism, The New Straits Times Online reported today.

"So far there have been no reports of Mara students being involved in militant or extremist activities,” he quoted telling reporters at the Umno Ketereh Raya open house in Kota Baru today.

Annuar said that the termination policy applies to all Mara education institution students as well as its sponsored students, adding that its scholars who participate in associations banned or unrecognised by Mara will face the same penalty.

Malaysia has been on alert of terrorist attacks recently after Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed that a grenade attack on the Movida bar in Puchong to be the first successful Islamic State (IS) attack in Malaysia.

He also announced the arrest of 15 people for militant activities.

Deputy Prime MInister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was reported saying yesterday that authorities will be enlisting rehabilitated radicalists to help stop the spread of terrorism by advising local university students against joining the Islamic State.

He said that the universities were the breeding ground for militant groups who targeted institutes of higher learning to spread their influence and ideology and recruit members through their favoured social media platforms.

He said Malaysian authorities will be keeping a closer watch on public universities and social media to monitor the spread of the extremist movement.
