KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 ― DAP’s actions in organising a "street protest” over the prosecution of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng belittled the country’s laws, said former DAP vice chairman Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim.

Tunku Abdul Aziz also said that it was "disappointing” that members of the public were "dragged” to the streets to defend Lim.

"The street protest did not respect the law. He (Guan Eng) should use the right processes to defend himself,” Tunku Abdul Aziz was reported as saying by Malay daily Utusan Malaysia today.

On Sunday, hundreds took to the streets of George Town in a show of solidarity with Lim, who is also DAP’s secretary-general.

Lim was charged with abuse of power and corruption last week over the alleged approval of a rezoning application by Magnificent Emblem to convert agricultural land to residential, and his purchase of his RM2.8 million house from businesswoman Phang Li Koon at below its market value of RM4.27 million.

DAP and opposition parties have claimed a political conspiracy in the case against Lim.

Tunku Abdul Aziz also said that Lim should take temporary leave from his post as Penang chief minister until the trial is over.

"When the case is over, he can resume his duties, plus he has two deputy chief ministers, so why does he have to worry?” Tunku Abdul Aziz said.
