KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 — A taxi driver who manhandled a female passenger of a ride-hailing service recently has been arrested. However, police clarified that there was no "mob violence” in the incident.
City police chief Datuk Amar Singh said the 44-year-old suspect was picked up at Taman Selayang Utama in Batu Caves on Wednesday.
He refuted earlier reports that claimed some 50 taxi drivers had assaulted passengers and shattered the windows of an Uber car on Monday.
"This is untrue and the incident only involved one suspect while the others were onlookers,” he said.
During the incident, a 43-year-old Iranian student from UTM Skudai with her child had booked a Uber driver to fetch them at KL Sentral.
When the car arrived, other taxi drivers approached her and berated her for using the ride-hailing service.
"The woman sustained injuries to her right thumb when the suspect dragged her out of the vehicle. The suspect also kicked the car,” Amar said, adding that the Uber driver should come forward to make a police report.
A Uber spokesman told Malay Mail they were ready to cooperate with authorities and offer assistance to the affected parties to ensure appropriate action against the perpetrator.
"We take the safety of both riders and drivers extremely seriously and we have a dedicated team working 24/7 to support our commitment to safety,” the spokesman said.
