JOHOR BARU, June 23 ― Johor police thwarted a Euro 2016 football betting syndicate worth RM3.5 million in 25 raids conducted under Ops Sogo from June 10.

Johor Police chief Datuk Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said 27 local men arrested in the raids include a 30-year-old man who was arrested in Bandar Jaya Putra, Setia Indah early this morning.

He said the suspects, aged 20 to 48 years, were believed to be agents or bookies, who could accept bets up to RM2.6 million each, for the syndicate.  

"The suspects were found using five websites to conduct betting activities,” he told a media conference here, today.

"Police seized one computer set, one cellphone and two wifi modems from the suspects arrested in Bandar Jaya Putra this morning.

Wan Ahmad Najmuddin said police also seized RM53,331, Singapore dollar worth 5,789, five computers, four laptop computers, three tablets, 24 cellphones and 105 notes of betting records.

The operation was conducted to eradicate betting activities or football gambling during the European Nations Football Championship (Euro) which ends on July 10. ― Bernama
