Unemployed man jailed for impersonating cop

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — An unemployed man was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court here today for impersonating a police officer. 

Zakaria Mustafa, 30, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Husna Dzulkifly to presenting himself as a police officer to Mohd Oliar Rahman, a Bangladeshi working in Malaysia.

He committed the offence in front of Mydin Jalan Silang, Dang Wangi here at around 1.45pm on June 14, under Section 170 of the Penal Code which carries imprisonment up to two years or a fine, or both, on conviction.

The court ordered Zakaria to serve his sentence from the day of his arrest on June 14, 2016.  

According to the fact sheet, the accused asked Mohd Oliar to hand over his passport to check if his working visa was still valid. Mohd Oliar has a valid visa until November 23, 2016.

Mohd Oliar who was unconvinced that the accused was a policeman, asked if he could show his police identification. A few minutes later, the police arrived and arrested the latter after he failed to produce his police ID.

Deputy public prosecutor Nur Farah Adilah Noordin appeared for the prosecution while Zakaria was unrepresented. — Bernama
