Country’s debt under control, says Mustapa

KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 — The country’s debt is still under control and the government is committed to maintain that the debt level does not exceed 55 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP), said the Minister of Trade International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.

Quoting the Treasury Secretary General Tan Sri Dr Irwan Serigar Abdullah, Mustapa said that the country’s economy was still solid despite facing with the challenge of world commodity prices downfall including oil and palm oil and China’s sluggish economy, the country’s largest trading partner.

In fact, he said, the challenges facing the country was also felt by the other open economy countries and countries that depended on commodities revenues such as oil.

However, he said, the government remained committed in maintaining the debt below 55 per cent of GDP while ensuring the county’s economic stability in the face of global economic challenges.

He was speaking to reporters after breaking fast organised by the ministry and its agencies here today. — Bernama
