KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 — Former national debater Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman rejected today an offer from Parti Generasi Baru (NewGen Party) to run for Parliament on its ticket in either the Kuala Kangsar or Sungai Besar seats.

The 24-year-old debate trainer at the International Islamic University Malaysia declined to run in either seat for fear of causing a split in votes.

"I am humbled with the offer and I thank the party for this, but I think I will pass," he told Malay Mail Online when contacted.

Instead, Syed Saddiq, who is in the secretariat of the Save Malaysia movement calling for the ouster of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, said he will be campaigning against the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates in both parliamentary seats.

"I am not with any political parties, not BN and not the opposition, but I will actively be lobbying against Najib's candidates in both by-elections," he said.

NewGen Party was founded by former MIC and PKR leader S. Gobi Krishnan and has reportedly more than 200 members nationwide.

On Monday, NewGen tweeted that it was willing to nominate Syed Saddiq in either parliamentary polls if the latter was keen.

By-elections in both seats will take place on June 16, with nomination day falling on June 5.
