SUBANG JAYA, May 29 — Despite increasing concern, the Health Ministry has yet to come up with guidelines on alcohol consumption.

Its Minister Datuk Seri S Subramaniam said today that the ministry’s director-general will make a decision after its next meeting.

“Not yet,” he said when asked if the ministry has a recommended drinking limit for Malaysians.

“That one my D-G’s control section will do it after we have the meeting,” he added.

Malay Mail Online reported yesterday that the Health Ministry is raising the legal drinking age from 18 to 21 from December 1, 2017.

The new regulations require a warning to be posted on the packaging of alcoholic beverages, similar to the mandatory general warning on cigarette packs in Malaysia.

According to the Food (Amendment) Regulations 2016 gazetted on May 17, those who fail to comply with the rules on the sale and labelling requirements for alcohol products can be jailed up to two years or fined a maximum of RM10,000.
