TAIPING, May 21 — The Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) and the schools are advised to take the initiative to install close-circuit televisions (CCTVs) as a measure to check disciplinary cases among students.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said this meant that the ministry took a stand to not compel the PTAs and schools to instal the CCTVs in their respective schools but to make the move as their own initiative.

“It’s up to the respective school to take the initiative as it is a positive move to check unhealthy developments within the school grounds,” he told reporters after a Teachers’ Day celebration at the Larut parliamentary level, here last night.

He was asked to comment on the move by Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bumbung Lima, Kepala Batas, Penang which became the first primary school in the country to instal the CCTV to track down and prevent misconduct and disciplinary problems among students.

Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, who is also the Member of Parliament for Kepala Batas, said nine units of CCTVs were installed at several strategic locations at the school in an effort to monitor the situation within and outside the school compound. — Bernama
