KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 — Police must soon complete their investigations on 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) to ensure those who committed wrongdoings are punished, a DAP lawmaker said today.
Noting that Auditor-General Tan Sri Ambrin Buang yesterday said there was enough in his audit of 1MDB to merit action, the Petaling Jaya Utara MP asserted the apparent delay in the police investigation was inviting suspicion.
“We call upon the Royal Malaysia Police to act with the necessary haste and urgency to ensure that the culprits behind the RM50 billion monster scandal are quickly brought to justice.
“The failure by the police to act, and the irony of the speed of investigations overseas will only lead Malaysians to conclude that they are doing their utmost best to cover up the heinous crime involving the most powerful political figures in the country,” he said in a statement.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar last month announced that his force would examine reports on 1MDB from the AG and the Public Accounts Committee for possible wrongdoing.
Khalid asked the public then to give the police time to complete its investigations.
The PAC in its report released on April 7 urged the authorities to investigate former 1MDB CEO Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi over weaknesses in the company’s management.
In the report, the panel said 1MDB’s board of directors failed in their responsibilities to the company and its shareholders by allowing its management to make decisions that were not in line with good accounting practices.
Since then, it has also emerged that possible fraud may have taken place involving US$3.5 billion in payments from 1MDB to Abu Dhabi’s Aabar Investment PJS that the latter said it never received.
