KUALA SELANGOR, May 15 — The Selangor Government has been accused of reneging on a promise to raise the level of a site for alternative housing to accommodate 50 people from four families before demolishing their homes on Tuesday.

One of the family heads affected, S. Gunasegaran, 59, said the promise to raise the level of a site near Kampung Seri Aman, Ijok was made during a previous meeting before the demolition was to be carried out.

“However, while the houses have been demolished, the level of the site has not been raised...the area is low-lying and can easily flood after heavy rain.

“How are we to come up with the money to raise the level of the site if the state government does not keep its promise,” said the lorry driver when met by reporters here today.

The father of four said he was forced to rent a house for RM1,000 a month and support his two schoolgoing children on a RM2,500 salary.

On May 10, the Selangor authorities demolished four of 30 houses in Kampung Seri Aman because they intruded into state government reserve land earmarked for the development of the My Selangor Housing Project.

A Bernama check on the allegedly promised housing site found it was still over-run with undergrowth and lower than the surrounding land.

Meanwhile, Selangor Federal Action Council chairman Datuk Seri Noh Omar said he regretted the action of the state government in demolishing four houses in the village without providing the occupants with a temporary shelter.

“Noh, who is also Selangor Barisan Nasional chairman said what the state government had done to the families was cruel.

Also present were Kuala Selangor MP Datuk Irmohizam Ibrahim and MIC national executive secretary K. Partiban.

Those affected were low income earners who would be more burdened if forced to build or rent other houses, noted Noh. — Bernama
