KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 — Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) today insisted it has not confirmed plans to contest in the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections, and that the matter would be decided by Pakatan Harapan’s top leadership.
Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said they will confirm everything in the next Pakatan Harapan presidential meeting.
“Statements related to these two by-elections should be discussed and agreed upon first in the Pakatan Harapan presidential meeting, especially after the mess in the Sarawak state election,” he said at a press conference here.
“Amanah appreciates suggestions from various parties regarding the two by-elections. However, Amanah stresses that nothing is confirmed until decided at the Pakatan Harapan presidential meeting.”
He also assured that there will be no clash between candidates from parties in the opposition pact during the by-elections like what happened in Sarawak.
PKR and DAP locked horns in the May 7 Sarawak election that cost them six seats due to overlaps.
Mohamad added the date for the presidential meeting has not been decided but will urge the Pakatan Harapan’s secretariat to hasten it.
PAS, which is excluded from the Pakatan Harapan federal opposition pact, has declared its intention to contest in both Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar, claiming ownership by custom.
But its splinter party Amanah has its eye on the Perak seat while PKR is gunning for the Selangor seat. DAP has expressed no interest to contest in the two seats.
The by-elections were called after both Sungai Besar MP Datuk Noriah Kasnon and Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Wan Muhammad Khairil Anuar Wan Muhammad died in a helicopter crash during the Sarawak state elections on May 5.
Both were from Umno, and both of them won their seats after defeating candidates from PAS in the last elections.
