KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 — Popular local rock musician and actor Awie was slapped a RM2,000 fine by a court today after he admitted to causing hurt to his former wife.

According to reports, the 47-year-old Awie, whose real name is Ahmad Azhar Othman, pleaded guilty to committing the offence against Rozana Misbun while the duo were in front of a Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) counter on Jalan Tun Razak here at 3pm on June 2014.

The New Straits Times report said Awie’s lawyer Hazman Harun told magistrate Husna Dzulkifly that his client is a father of five and regretted nudging Rozana in the forehead.

“The incident happened when Awie realised that his ex-wife had spent the money that was kept for his children’s education,” the lawyer was quoted as saying.

Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Zikri Jaafar, however, sought a more deterrent sentence, reportedly telling the court that Awie’s action had caused Rozana pain and public humiliation.

“Awie is a well-known personality and he should set a good example to the public,” Ahmad was quoted saying.

According to The Star Online, Awie settled the fine.
