KUALA LUMPUR, April 16 ― The Save Malaysia movement has not decided on who it wants as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s replacement just yet, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.
The former prime minister, who spearheaded that Citizens’ Declaration last month before Save Malaysia was launched, reportedly told this to reporters tonight during a walkabout at the night market along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
“No, no, no. There’s no name,” he was quoted in Malaysiakini as saying when asked to comment on Datuk Zaid Ibrahim’s endorsement of Najib’s deputy Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for the post of prime minister.
The Save Malaysia movement has come under pressure recently to name a potential replacement for Najib, with critics saying consensus may not come easy due to the different agendas of those supporting the movement.
Zaid, a former minister and one of the movement’s key protagonists, endorsed Zahid, however, for the post in a blog post on Tuesday titled: “Give Zahid a chance”.
Former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, another Najib critic and Save Malaysia member, also reportedly said on Wednesday that he “does not mind” if Zahid becomes the next prime minister.
This may not, however, sit well with members from Pakatan Harapan. PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail recently revealed to Malay Mail Online that Dr Mahathir's continued attacks on her husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was the main reason why she refused to be part of Save Malaysia.
Earlier today, the Save Malaysia secretariat issued a statement in an apparent bid to lay to rest speculation on the matter.
In the statement, secretariat secretary Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar said the chosen candidate must be one who commands the confidence of the majority in the Dewan Rakyat, which is consistent with democratic requirements.
It added that it will not hesitate to revive its campaign if Najib’s successor, regardless who the person is, fails to perform.
Dr Mahathir, together with politicians from both sides of the divide and civil society, launched the CD on March 4 to push for Najib's resignation. The CD was later dubbed the Save Malaysia movement and plans to organise a nationwide roadshow to canvas for support were announced.
