KUALA LUMPUR, April 11 — The police have obtained information on two Uighurs of Turkish descent who are reportedly attempting to enter Malaysia to plot terrorist attacks in Thailand.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said his men were working closely with the Thai authorities to monitor the situation.

“At the moment, we have heightened checks at all entry and exit points in the country,” he told a news conference.

Khalid said local police were relying solely on information from the Thai intelligence, when asked if the Malaysian police were working with counterparts from other countries on the matter.

Thai newspaper Khaosod on Friday leaked an intelligence memorandum by Surat Thani Governor Wongsiri Promchana, which claimed that two Uighurs and two Russians were plotting attacks in Koh Samui and Phuket.

News reports also quoted Thailand’s police chief Gen Chakthip Chaijinda as acknowledging the authenticity of the memo.

Wongsiri has since issued a terror attack warning for the four-day Songkran festival, which begins tomorrow, on both islands.
