KUALA LUMPUR, April 7 — The Giant Panda cub born in Malaysia now has a name — Nuan Nuan.

“The name in Mandarin means friendliness,” said Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar when he announced the name today.

Nuan Nuan was born on Aug 18 last year at the National Zoo to Giant Pandas Xiang Xiang and Liang Liang on a 10-year loan from China to commemorate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Malaysia.

Nuan Nuan was picked from the names submitted by the public in a contest organised by the ministry and the Malaysian Zoological Society from November 17 to December 17 last year.

The process to select the name underwent several stages over a period of two to three months under the scrutiny of a special jury panel, said Dr Wan Junaidi.  — Bernama
