KUALA LUMPUR, April 7 — Datuk Seri Najib Razak is seeking an apology and retraction from PKR’s Rafizi Ramli over the latter’s claim that there has been abuse of revenue collected from the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the prime minister’s lawyer said.

Najib’s counsel Datuk Mohd Hafarizam Harun told reporters yesterday that he had been instructed on Tuesday to send a letter of demand to Rafizi over allegations made during his speech at the anti-GST rally last Saturday at Dataran Merdeka.

“I am going to serve the LOD to Rafizi (as soon as possible),” he was quoted saying by English language daily New Straits Times.

He explained that Rafizi was alleged to have linked Najib to the abuse of GST revenue to buy clothes.

“It is for implying that the GST money was used to buy textiles,” Mohd Hafarizam was quoted saying by English language daily The Star.

According to The Star’s report, he further said that if Rafizi did not abide by the demand, a defamation lawsuit would be instituted against the Pandan MP.

The rally to mark the one-year anniversary of the GST rollout drew thousands to the streets of the capital on April 2.

The event went by smoothly despite earlier warnings by the police against using Dataran Merdeka, and ended by 5.30pm after several speeches by opposition figures and a surprise showing by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
