GEORGE TOWN, March 24 ― DAP’s Jagdeep Singh Deo today challenged all elected representatives from Barisan Nasional (BN) to publicly declare their assets within the next 48 hours.

The Penang state executive councillor said since the representatives saw fit to cause such a commotion over Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s purchase of his house, they should be willing to tell the public what they do with their money.

“I am making this challenge because of the situation and controversy on his purchase of the bungalow,” he told a brief press conference at his office today.

Jagdeep, who is Penang DAP deputy chairman, pointed out that all Pakatan Harapan representatives in Penang and Selangor have publicly declared their assets and have also had their declarations verified by independent auditors.

“So I want to challenge BN to come forward and declare their assets and be scrutinised to see if their assets are beyond their means,” he said.

He recalled that in November 2013, Lim had urged Penang’s Umno assemblymen to declare their arrests and said the state would even bear the cost.

But the offer was not taken up, Jagdeep said.

On the recent point raised that all BN federal lawmakers have declared their assets to the prime minister, the Penang DAP man said this was a pointless exercise as it was still kept hidden from the public.

“We want public declarations of their assets so that the public can scrutinise it,” he said.

Over the past week, several reports have been lodged against Lim accusing him of corruption over his RM2.8 million purchase of a house, which has also been linked to the sale of state land back in 2012.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is currently investigating the case.
