KUALA LUMPUR, March 21 — A former daughter in-law of Sarawak’s Head of State has filed a cross appeal for the RM30 million ‘mutaah’ awarded to her by the Syariah High Court to be increased to RM100 million.

Shahnaz Abdul Majid, 53, submitted the notice to the Syariah High Court registry here today through her lawyer Dr Mohd Rafie Mohd Shafie.

In the notice, she expressed dissatisfaction over the RM30 million award set by Syariah justice Muhamad Abdul Karim Wahab in her case against ex-husband Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir Abdul Taib.

On March 10 this year, the judge ordered Mahmud Abu Bekir, 53, to pay the amount to Shahnaz, giving him three months from March 31 to settle it in installments.

The woman had sought for RM100 million in her claim for mutaah filed on June 9, 2011.

Mohd Rafie had described the RM30 million as the highest amount ever to be awarded in a mutaah case.

Meanwhile, the court fixed Friday for hearing of the application by Mahmud Abu Bekir for a stay of execution of the judge’s decision.

The couple were married on Jan 9, 1992 and have a son aged 23 before separating in a ‘talak satu’ divorce on May 11, 2011. — Bernama
