PPUTRAJAYA, March 18 — Hundreds of “Mat Rempit” and “Red Shirts” have congregated at Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s office here as part of an Umno leader’s bid to submit a memorandum in protest of his Citizens’ Declaration.

A strong police presence is visible at the Perdana Leadership Foundation that serves as the former prime minister’s office, where Sungai Besar Umno chief Datuk Jamal Md Yunos is planning to deliver the memorandum.

Jamal has yet to arrive but crowds of his “Red Shirt” supporters continue to stream in on buses, motorcycles and cars, creating a commotion.

Staff at the Perdana Leadership Foundation, an anti-war organisation Dr Mahathir set up after he retired as prime minister, have sealed the entrance of the office.

Police personnel have formed a human barricade behind the gates.

The red shirt supporters, about 400 of them, mostly consist of youths and the elderly. Some as young as 10 were also seen together with the crowd.

Jamal showed up at about 3.45pm clad in a white baju melayu and a skullcap, before leading a march from the parking space outside the Perdana Peace Foundation office.

Speaking to reporters there, the Umno leader said he and his supporters were present to show their disappointment with Dr Mahathir for “betraying” their trust with his collaboration with the DAP, which Jamal declared to be the number one enemy of the Malays.

“Some of those in the crowd here are as old as he is. We feel very disappointed. He betrayed our trust when he announced a cooperation with the DAP, which we know is very racist,” Jamal said.

He also accused Dr Mahathir and other Umno leaders who joined the Save Malaysia movement of trying to divide the Malays, but did not explain how.

Jamal then reminded Dr Mahathir of the latter’s accomplishments when he had been prime minister, and claimed these would not have been possible if the country’s dominant ethnic community was divided.

“Remember that all the achievements he made and our success are attained through Malay unity,” he said.

Jamal then said his movement will continue to defend the Najib administration as it was elected democratically.

“I would like to say that we the Malays will continue to uphold and support the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and we would not hesitate to do what is necessary to defend it,” he said.

The memorandum was handed over to an official from the Perdana Peace Foundation under police watch.
