KUALA LUMPUR, March 14 — A federal lawmaker today demanded the Health Ministry investigate growing illegal sales of alcohol to students in Klang.
PKR's Kapar MP G. Manivannan alleged that at least four schools were affected in his constituency and that no action was taken despite repeated complaints.
"This has been happening for the past two to three years since I became Kapar MP. Now the problem is across the nation, that is why I want the ministry to step in," he said referring to the Health Ministry.
But he also added that the Selangor government, which is headed by his own PKR, has similarly not reacted to the same complaints.
Manivannan explained that students in his area were buying the cheap alcohol and mixing them with soft drinks to consume on school grounds.
The lawmaker also offered to provide samples of empty bottles to authorities for testing in the event they did not believe his claims.
The legal drinking age in Malaysia is 18, although there are currently plans to raise this to 21.
