KUALA LUMPUR, March 14 — A PAS MP today demanded that the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry ban all forms of advertisements featuring women's body parts, after a local airline controversially used women’s buttocks in a promotion.
Rantau Panjang MP Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff said that low-cost carrier Firefly Airline’s advertisement was "very saddening" as it objectifies women.
"We hope the ministry stops all these, restricts and bans all forms of advertisements which exploits women in any way, regardless even if the ad features a women's legs, or faces which makes us feel as if women are trade tool in our country," she added.
Firefly last week used images of women’s buttocks in an advertising campaign for discounted flight tickets. One such advertisement featured the lower half of a woman in the airline’s signature orange and accompanied with the caption “Come grab it real fast” to promote a 50 per cent discount on fares.
The move drew criticism across social media as well as allegations of sexism.
Firefly removed the advertisements over the weekend and issued an apology today.
