PETALING JAYA, March 12 — Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan said today that the Save Malaysia movement has not agreed on the candidate they want as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s replacement should its campaign for his removal succeed.
The former Bar Council president said, however, that the movement has “many options” to choose from.
Without suggesting if the person should be from Umno or the opposition’s side, the lawyer turned activist said Save Malaysia’s key objective is to unseat Najib.
“The main objective of Save Malaysia is for Najib to step down and that is the first step.
“Second step is to find a candidate but we have not gone there yet and it will be discussed later but if you ask now, there are many options (to replace Najib),” she said.
Ambiga, who was among those who signed a declaration calling for Najib’s removal, was commenting on Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir statement that the initiative was not to topple the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration BN but to replace Najib with another Umno man.
On activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin, popularly known as Chegubard, forming another anti-Najib group because he was unhappy with former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed leading Save Malaysia, Ambiga said there was nothing wrong in doing so but she did not indicate if she supported the group.
“He (Badrul Hisham) is free to do what he wishes and since both groups are fighting for the same agenda, which is for Najib to step down, I don’t see anything wrong with this,” she told Malay Mail Online after speaking at a talk entitled “Day of solidarity- Live Mercy” by the Council of Churches Malaysia.
At the talk, Ambiga together with SIS Forum (Malaysia) group’s founder Zainah Mahfoozah Anwar and Kuala Lumpur Archbishop Julian Leow spoke on the importance of standing up for one’s rights in defending the nation.
Last Friday, Dr Mahathir and over 40 BN veterans, opposition leaders and human rights activists came together to sign a Citizens’ Declaration to campaign for Najib’s removal, with the group now renamed the Save Malaysia movement and aiming to get hundreds of thousands to add on their signatures.
