KUALA LUMPUR, March 12 — Any attempt to force the newly-named “Save Malaysia” movement into failure will not be successful, Datuk Zaid Ibrahim said today as he insisted the group represents the interests of the majority.
The former Umno minister also said others were free to set up their own rival movements but the “Save Malaysia” coalition led by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will remain at the forefront of all efforts to unseat the prime minister.
“There are a lot of people who want to try to make this movement fail, but they will not succeed because majority of Malaysians are supporting us.
“Because we have the biggest support from all groups, the biggest groups are with us,” he told Malay Mail Online when contacted.
Last Friday, Dr Mahathir and over 40 Barisan Nasional (BN) veterans, opposition leaders and human rights activists came together to sign a Citizens’ Declaration to campaign for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s removal, with the group now renamed the Save Malaysia movement and aiming to get hundreds of thousands to add on their signatures.
Yesterday, activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin said a new group that also wants Najib ousted will be meeting tonight to voice their objections against Dr Mahathir’s leadership of “Save Malaysia”.
The leader of the Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) group, popularly known as Chegubard, said the “People’s Expression Night” event will see more than 15 individuals speaking to voice their rejection of efforts to use Dr Mahathir to lead reforms in this country.
Chegubard had said the event at 8pm tonight at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) is organised by nine groups including SAMM, Otai Reformasi and undergraduate groups.
“We are not a coalition, we are not a new group, we just set up a platform for people to express hope and give warning to political leaders that use the people’s name, don’t simply make your own declaration and bring Dr Mahathir as your leader,” he told Malay Mail Online, adding that it has found support from federal opposition Pakatan Harapan leaders.
He said his group would not weaken efforts to remove Najib, but said it would go beyond that to also seek the fall of the ruling BN coalition.
Earlier today, Najib said at a function in Sarawak that “Save Malaysia” does not represent the views of the majority.
