PETALING JAYA , March 12— Malaysian Facebook users are in awe of the efforts of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department in trying to reconnect with a girl whom they rescued 22 years ago from the Highland Towers disaster.

The department had posted photos of Malay Mail’s frontpage report yesterday on its Facebook page along with reports about Nur Hamidah Nadjib, who was then 14 months old, and her rescuer, Norian Saad.

It received more than 849 “likes” and was shared 68 times, six hours after its posting.

Facebook user, Joran Patah, said the deeds of the Fire and Rescue Department members were usually forgotten and they are truly unsung heroes.

Another Facebook user, Visithra Manikam shared similar sentiments.

“They are really Malaysia’s unsung heroes. Thank you for serving the country and risking your lives to save people,” she said.

Puteree Darussalam said she would be praying for the reunion to happen.

“I will be praying that the meeting will come to fruition,” she said, adding that she hoped the department would keep the public updated of the reunion.

For Facebook user Cikgu Irna Ahmah Sainin, she said she prays for the safety of firefighters in service.

“These unsung heroes have a heavy burden and responsibility to the nation,” she said.

Malay Mail reported on Thursday the department was trying to put Nur Hamidah, who lives in East Java, in touch with Norizan, who is its corporate communication division senior superintendent II.

The department’s search for her came about after she posted a photo of herself, when she was 14 months old, on a stretcher following her rescue.

Her photo was later shared by the department on its Facebook page with a caption stating that Kamunting fire station chief Taufiq Abd Sattar had made contact with Nur Hamidah’s father.

In Malay Mail’s report yesterday, it was revealed that after her Facebook post, Nur Hamidah, who is a midwife, had sent Norizan a text message on Tuesday.

“I am just so grateful I have been able to contact Bapa Norizan. I thanked him for rescuing me and told him I cannot wait to see him.”

Norizan and Nur Hamidah hopes to meet soon. However, nothing has been confirmed due to Nur Hamidah’s work commitment.

Block One of the Highland Towers in Taman Hillview, Ulu Kelang collapsed  on December 11, 1993, killing 48 people.

The collapse was attributed to an overload of a drainage system to divert a small stream.

The stream was diverted during the construction of the buildings. In 1991, the hilltop behind the towers was cleared for a Bukit Antarabangsa development project that led to a severe soil erosion.
