GEORGE TOWN, March 8 — Penang is turning to attract tourists from Korea and Myanmar with the introduction of direct flights from its island airport to Seoul and Yangon by this month’s end.

The latest statistics show Indonesians and Singaporeans made up 60 per cent of the state’s visitors last year but the Pakatan Harapan government hopes to increase the number of visitors from Korea and Myanmar in the near future.

“We are also conducting road shows and promoting Penang as a tourist destination in Korea and Myanmar,” state Tourism Development Committee chairman Law Heng Kiang said.

He said Penang is currently in talks with three airlines for direct flights connecting the South Korean capital city of Seoul.

“We are offering incentives of USD10 (RM41) to the airline for each tourist flown into the state through the direct flight,” he told reporters after attending the soft opening of the Asia Comic Cultural Museum.

The Penang government is also still in the midst of discussions on the direct flights with three airlines, namely, AirAsia, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines.

According to statistics last year, Indonesians made up the bulk of tourists arriving in Penang, at 39.32 per cent to be followed by Singapore at 21.14 per cent.

The other top visitors to Penang are from China, Japan, Australia, Taiwan, US, UK, Thailand and Germany.
