KUALA LUMPUR, March 5 — The Umno Supreme Council has been urged to hold an emergency meeting to discuss disciplinary action against members who violate the party’s code of ethics by conspiring with the opposition to topple party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Tanjung Malim Umno division chief Datuk Mohd Khusairi Abdul Talib said he was disappointed with the action by the group who wanted to topple the Prime Minister through undemocratic means.
“We are disappointed with the attitude of some leaders and former Umno party leaders who conspired with the opposition to topple Najib,” he said in a statement here today.
Mohd Khusairi said his division would continue to give their undivided loyalty to Najib’s leadership as prime minister and party president.
Yesterday, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad led a group comprising 58 people, among them his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali and their son Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir to sign an anti-Najib declaration calling for the ouster of Najib as the prime minister.
The others included Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, Datuk Mustafa Ali, Lim Kit Siang and Datuk Zaid Ibrahim.
Meanwhile in KUALA LUMPUR, Social and Cultural Affairs Advisor to the Government, Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim said the movement should give current leaders the opportunity to administer the country for the remaining two years before the next general election.
“They have no right to ask Najib to leave his post,” he told reporters after opening the pre-launch of ‘Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (IIUM) Alumni Global Home Coming 2016’ here today.
“There are related matters which have not been settled. There are two more years for housekeeping, not to ask to step down,” he said, describing the declaration as a desperate political assembly in an uncertain situation.
Earlier, Rais who is IIUM president, had launched the alumni’s portal, REACH magazine, Alumni Scholarship Fund and Alumni Coffee Table Book.
A total of RM600,000 worth of contributions was collected at the ceremony to finance activities as well as fund the alumni. — Bernama
