KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 16 ― Consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya might be paying more for water usage soon if the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) approves a three-year plan submission by new water service provider Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd.
Air Selangor's chief executive officer Suhaimi Kamaralzaman said the plan will take into account costs of handling the operation and management of water services in the three areas, Malay daily Sinar Harian reported today.
“However, any checks and suggestion on water tariff is in the hands of SPAN,” he was quoted saying.
Air Selangor is set to be the new water service provider for Malaysia's most populous state and the neighbouring two Federal Territories from next month after the completion of a master agreement with state water concessionaires last September.
The company took over from Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) and Puncak Niaga Sdn Bhd in October but both are operating as subsidiary companies until Air Selangor takes over fully as the main operator.
Currently, consumers in Selangor enjoy free water up to 20 cubic metres.
Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali was previously reported as saying that the free water scheme after 2017 would depend on the state’s financial capability to continue in providing the scheme, which was was introduced in 2008.
