KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 12 ― The Johor police will introduce new automated devices that can immediately detect vehicles with unpaid summonses for traffic offences.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Sulaiman Salleh said the Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) device has a camera that is connected to a tablet containing a database of those who have breached traffic laws, local daily The Star reported.

Sulaiman said other states in Malaysia will also be using the same device that can immediately notify officers if a vehicle owner is on the database.

“The use of ANPR devices, which will be used on both foreign and locally registered vehicles, will be introduced to other police districts and installed at checkpoints nationwide by early June,” he was quoted saying.

“The system is linked to the police crime department and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) records, making it easier for us to detect stolen or unregistered vehicles or those belonging to persons of interest to the police,” he said.

Sulaiman said the police will also be able to print out summonses on the spot with a new Mobile Compound Online Payments System device, which is akin to a mini printer that can print out a photo of the vehicle as evidence of the traffic offence committed.

Sulaiman said his district’s police will be permanently deploying one unit of the device by next week at the checkpoint for Johor-Singapore at the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex, while two other units will be deployed during special operations.
