KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 10 ― Members in the pro-moderation group G25 should be stripped of their titles for allegedly insulting Islam, said an armed forces veterans group today.
The Daulat group representing non-pensioned former soldiers claimed that the G25's call to review the country's Shariah laws was a challenge to the sovereignty of Islamic law.
“We know many of the G25 members are Datuk, Datuk Seri and Tan Sri holders. We call upon the Rulers Council to withdraw all the titles bestowed upon them.
“This is for their stupidly in not thinking about Islamic issues and insulting Islam itself,” Daulat president Mohammad Shabudin Teh was quoted as saying by Malay daily Sinar Harian.
He added that G25's suggestion was irrelevant and possible threat to the harmony of the Muslim community.
G25 representative Datuk Noor Farida Ariffin last year said the group would form a panel to review Shariah laws that were inconsistent with the Federal Constitution and recommend these be amended or repealed.
During the announcement, she gave the example of laws concerning khalwat, or close proximity, which she said violated individuals' right to privacy,
She was heavily criticised for the example, received death threats and is being investigated under the Sedition Act.
The G25 styles itself as a pro-moderation group comprising Malay former senior civil servants that is seeking for Putrajaya to uphold the supremacy of the Federal Constitution in the country's laws.
