SIBU, Jan 13 — The police have yet to find any new leads in the investigation on the shooting dead of a man at Jalan Long Bridge last Saturday, which was allegedly linked to the underworld activities primarily drug.

Two men, who were still being remanded, have yet to spill the beans but State CID Chief SAC Dev Kumar said his side would not leave any stones unturned to solve the case.

“We will investigate the case from all angles and will not rule out anything until the case is solved,” he told a press conference at Sibu Police headquarters here today.

This included information circulated in the social media saying the victim, Ting Meng Min, 30, who was a pub operator in Miri, was allegedly one of Sarawak’s four drug lords who was in the midst of expanding his territory.

“Rumours are rumours and we cannot take it at surface value. What appeared in the social media are troublesome as most of them are not true. Still we have to investigate them,” he said.

SAC Dev said the police had labelled the incident as a high profile case but assured the public, who felt uneasy about it, that Sibu is still a safe place.

He said in the past two years there had been 11 murder cases but not gang related and did not involve any firearms, thus making the incident on Saturday an isolated case.

In the 11.09pm incident, the victim, his China national girlfriend Xiao Fen, 22, two bodyguards and two friends had just finished eating at a restaurant and were about to leave when a white Toyota Hilux suddenly pulled up not far from them and the driver took out a shotgun and opened fire.

The victim, died at a private hospital here at 12.31am following gunshot wounds to the chest, left shoulder and back. His girlfriend who was hurt on the shoulder and left wrist was taken to Sibu Hospital.

So far five men were detained where three of them have been released while another two, aged 35 and 42, are still being remanded until Jan 17.

Meanwhile Sibu police had done a very good job in reducing crimes here with only 869 cases of index crime reported last year as compared to 1,245 cases in 2014, a 30 per cent reduction, he said.

From 869 cases, he said 782 cases were property crime and only 87 cases were violent crime.

He also admitted that the ‘Ops Cantas’ launched on Jan 11 by 20 officers and 92 personnel from Sarawak and Sibu Police Headquarters was to prevent any retaliation from any groups following the Saturday incident.

“Other objective is to hit hard on the local thugs and their illegal businesses with focus given on entertainment outlets, gaming arcades or places that are frequented by them,” he said.

SAC Dev said the ‘Ops Cantas’ would be continued until Chinese New Year.
