KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 ― The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has ended investigations into the criminal breach of trust allegations against Baitulmal Professional Institute (IPB) that were reported by the Islamic college’s CEO, having found no element of corruption in the case.

Sources from the anti-graft agency said the complaints by Dr Syed Omar Syed Agil, who was purportedly suspended from IPB last October for whistleblowing but has since won a temporary injunction against the suspension, were about accounting technicalities and not corruption.

“Case closed. When there's no criminal issue, we stop the investigation,” an MACC source told Malay Mail Online yesterday.

“It’s more of an audit issue. MACC will only investigate on corruption issues, not audit issues. Looking into the issue raised by this guy, it’s an audit issue. We won't encroach to force management to reveal whatever financial details,” the source added.

Malay Mail Online reported last week Syed Omar’s reports to the MACC and to the police on alleged corruption and criminal breach of trust in the IPB, a private higher education institution that is 70 per cent owned by the Federal Territories Islamic Council (MAIWP).

The IPB CEO had claimed that the increase of IPB’s debt from RM4.8 million in 2012 to RM10 million in 2014 was likely due to the approval of false claims.

He also accused IPB of overpaying taxes by RM605,000 in 2014 and claimed that financial mismanagement and criminal breach of trust have been occurring in the Islamic college since 2012.

The MACC had directed a search and seizure at the IPB premises here on September 29 last year after Syed Omar lodged a report with the graftbusters on August 14, but it could not be conducted as the relevant IPB officer was on medical leave.
