Part of Melawati Mall structure collapses, injuring five

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 31 ― Five foreign workers were injured, one of them seriously, when part of the Melawati Mall structure which was under construction in Taman Melawati here, collapsed last night.

Following the 10pm incident, all the injured construction workers who were from Indonesia and Bangladesh were sent to the Ampang Hospital for treatment.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director Mohd Sani Harul when met at the scene said the incident was believed to have occurred when the scaffolding at the construction site suddenly collapsed and hit the workers.

“The workers who were hurt were badly trapped, but they were removed by the fire and rescue personnel,” he said, adding that there were 25 workers at the construction site during the time.

Mohd Sani said the department was carrying out final checks to ensure there were no more victimstrapped under the rubble.

Meanwhile, Bina Puri Holding Berhad project director Anthony Lee said the company would compensate all the victims involved in the incident. ― Bernama
